I’m Shail. I teach the electronic keyboard in Ahmedabad, and online. Six years old or sixty, first lesson or Grade 8 — it’s one student at a time, so the class is built around whoever is sitting at the keyboard.

I’m Shail Mewada, and I’ve been playing the keyboard for most of my life and teaching it in Ahmedabad since 2017. I trained in contemporary music first, then went off and studied Indian classical, which most keyboard teachers don’t bother with. I think that mix is why my lessons are solid without being rigid.

I sat the graded keyboard exams myself while I was still learning. It is the same road I take my students down now, so I know where it gets hard.

Then I went the other way and spent time with Indian classical — raga, taal, and the patience it quietly beats into you. It made me a better player.
Teaching, which I like most
Over 120 students later, this is the part I enjoy the most. Kids, teenagers, working adults, people starting at sixty — all of them.
My job isn’t to make you practise. It’s to make you want to.
Most students come in for one of these. A few end up dipping into all three.
Where most people start. You learn songs you actually want to play — film music, pop, whatever is stuck in your head — and you pick up chords, rhythm and the keyboard’s sounds while doing it. I don’t hand out dry exercises for the sake of it.
Some students like having something to aim at. The Trinity grades give you that — a clear ladder, one rung at a time. We do the playing and the theory together, and we only enter the exam when you are actually ready.
For students who want the traditional side — raga, taal, proper technique. It asks more patience of you than the other two, and I won’t pretend otherwise. It also makes you a far better musician.
Every student gets a plan with real milestones, so you always know what you are working on this month and how far you have come since you started. Nobody drifts from week to week here.

Shail sir is one of the finest humans. We have had the privilege to train our kids under his expert and very disciplined training. I teach from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. You can come in person, or take the same lessons online from wherever you are — I don’t treat the online students as second class.
Most of my students walked in having never touched a keyboard. You start at the first note and go from there. One of them started as a senior citizen and was playing with both hands within 20 lessons — so being a beginner is really not the problem people think it is.
From about five or six upwards, and there is no upper limit — I teach schoolkids, teenagers and working adults. Every lesson is one-on-one, so it gets paced to the person in front of me.
Yes, Initial through Grade 8, both the practical and the theory. I cleared these exams myself, so I know which grades trip people up. That said, the exams are optional — plenty of my students never sit one.
I do, and they work better than people expect. Same structure as the in-person class. Several families outside Ahmedabad learn this way.
